Died from illnesses contracted as a result of work on the rescue and recovery from the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001. Detective Thomas Barnitt died as the result of cancer that he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. Detective Barnitt had served with the NYPD for 22 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
