Kenny G. Fung was appointed to the force on January 26, 1981. He was promoted to Detective on March 10, 1989. Among his previous commands were the Brooklyn South Task Force and the Auto Crime Unit. On January 13, 1997, while assigned to the 72 Squad, Det. Fung and a partner were in Puerto Rico to apprehend two suspects wanted in a New York City homicide. The partners were in Sabana Trujillo Alto when, at approximately 7:00 P.M. on January 13, 1997, Fung passed out and was rushed to the hospital. It was determined he suffered a massive and fatal heart attack. His death was deemed in the line of duty. He was 44 years old. Det. Fung was described by friends and colleagues as “a great cop,” “always a gentleman”, and “a pleasure to work with.” His colleagues said they, “Missed the great laughs, and good food,” that accompanied his company at the Squad, and joked about his mix of Chinese and English when he spoke. Det. Fung was survived by his wife and three sons, one of whom, Kenneth Fung, Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps and retired as a decorated first grade NYPD Detective. He proudly wore his father’s shield #3152, until he retired from Staten Island Homicide in 2019. The northeast corner of Plymouth Road and Mulberry Avenue in Staten Island is named the “Det. Kenny G. Fung Way.” For more information about Det. Kenny G. Fung, visit the DEA website Honor Roll.
